Build refresh
I'm considering a new rig setup, thinking about whether an upgrade from my current one made in November 2019 is worthwhile. Here are my current specifications:
Asus TUF X570 plus non wifi
AMD Ryzen 7 3800x 8 cores @ 3.9ghz, base air cooler
32 gigs g-skills 3600mhz
RTX 4080 (previously had a GTX 980ti from 2016)
2 Western digital Blue SSD's (500G for Windows and 2 TB for the rest)
M.2 WD Black for games (Steam)
750 watts EVGA P2 platinum
Case: Cooler Master MasterCase MC500 mid-tower
If I upgrade, I'd consider:
AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 12 cores @ 4.7ghz
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black or Cooler Master MasterLiquid 360 (interested in water cooling, good for mid to long term, 3-5 years)
Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX ATX
GTX 4080 would fit here
Kingston Fury 2x8gb 6000mhz
I’d likely move the M.2 from this one, install a WD Blue SSD 500G for Windows and a 4TB drive
EVGA SuperNOVA 850 GT 80+ Gold
The price is roughly 1400-1500$ CA right now. I still own my 2012 Cooler Master Scout 1 case, so my idea would be to transfer the 2019 build into the Storm case and use the MC500 as the new setup. Please let me know if this makes sense.
If you're looking to save money, it seems likely the present board can handle a 5800x3d configuration. You could then opt for one of those, upgrade the cooling if necessary, and install the new GPU, along with an SSD upgrade. This would leave more capacity for future transfers. I believe the 9000 series will be available soon, which might be worth thinking about.
Honestly, unless there's something specific your current setup isn't doing, you're not going to notice a big difference day to day. I still regularly go between the 5800X3D and Ryzen 3600, and yes, I can tell when I'm on the faster machine... But it never really /matters/. Certainly not enough to justify what the upgrade cost. I'm personally waiting for the next major socket.
If you're eager to invest and want a refresh, it seems suitable. It won't feel outdated for a few years, roughly 3 to 5 years based on how the games affect it.
😉
The performance boost isn't huge, especially considering the cost, but it adds value over time.
Although 32Gb isn't strictly required, choosing 32Gb is better than 16 if you're purchasing now. Especially for modded titles, they can consume a lot of RAM and approach 12 or more. You're unlikely to go beyond 16 in the near future, but 32Gb won't be too expensive. You should also be able to upgrade it to your next build.
