I recently decided to buy the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE air cooler for my 14th Gen Intel i7-14700K processor. Because of budget limits, this solution aims to provide strong thermal performance at a reasonable cost. I’m wondering if it was the right choice given the price. Have I been too cautious about cooling needs? Should I have gone for a 240mm or 360mm AIO cooler instead? Still, it’s all about staying within my budget.

This generally works by trying it and checking for thermal throttle on hwinfo64.
Maintaining the 14700k at recommended Intel settings should prevent problems.
Setting P1/P2 to unlimited can cause throttling even with the biggest AIO available.
Intel previously claimed you could run this safely without risks.
Since some BIOS issues later affected other models, they haven’t spoken much about overclocking now.
Cooler reviews suggest air coolers and similar designs work well for most users.
They also indicate these coolers perform comparably to or better than the 240 AIO.
To achieve higher temperatures, you need applications that utilize all cores at full capacity.
Most common tasks limit usage to a few cores while others stay idle.
I think I'll upgrade it later. I won't be overclocking it on the air cooler right now. Just need something temporary that won't cause the CPU to degrade.
There are actually three versions of that cooler. V2 and V3 will be released later. It's not a big difference for fans that can handle higher RPMs, although it does mean more noise.

Cooling for either AIO or air requires a strong supply of fresh air to allow the cooler to function properly.
Heat production shouldn't be too significant.
Your usage won't completely fill all threads that create heat like a batch application would.
The assassin should be okay.
I own the HAF XB evo, and it performs exceptionally well with air cooling.
It’ll be fine, it’s a pretty good air cooler.
A 360 aio will probably do a little better but if you’re going to spend so much for so little extra performance why not buy a faster pc in the first place.
