Hello, I need assistance locating a micro-ATX motherboard that fits this CPU for a mid-range workstation. It should include at least two PCIe 3.2 x16 slots, one M.2 slot, and six SATA ports. You're looking for something under £150 on the used market. Any suggestions would be really helpful.

Hey there! If you haven't already invested in a CPU, I suggest going for an HP z420 or z600. They're affordable and dependable, especially if you get the right components like RAM, power supply, processor, maybe even a hard drive and a Quadro graphics card for around a couple hundred dollars. Otherwise, you'll end up with something similar to what you see on Amazon.com: MACHINIST X79 Desktop Motherboard, LGA 2011 Micro ATX Gaming Motherboard with NVME M.2 Support 4 Channels DDR3 ECC RAM, SATA 3.0, Intel i7 Xeon E5 V1 V2 Processor. Electronics you're missing out on right now.

Consensus reached. At your budget level, a suitable used machine can be located with a bit of effort. With a V3 CPU, compatibility is immediate across all models. (V4 CPUs often require a BIOS upgrade.) The HP Zx40 belongs to the Haswell/Broadwell workstation line. Zx20 corresponds to Sandy/Ivy Bridge designs. The Z240 uses LGA1151 rather than LGA2011-3. Dell’s comparable options are the Precision 5810, 7810, and 7910 series. If you’re aiming for a generic, unbranded board, an X99 or C612 platform would be necessary, as DDR3 support isn’t available on V3 and V4 chipsets.

I don’t have that CPU yet—I’m using an AMD Phenon™ II X4 925 @ 2.8GHz and some Asus motherboard. I’m aiming for a system with about 8-10 cores. Everything else is in place, so thanks for your assistance!

LGA2011-3 offers access to affordable CPUs with high core counts while maintaining decent performance. Using a refurbished workstation means missing out on M.2 slots on the motherboard, which can be resolved with a cheap PCIe adapter.

Consented with the details, the model he selected is a V3 processor using LGA2011-3 socket, not LGA2011. He’d need a motherboard supporting either X99 or C612 chipsets. X79/C602 won’t work. I’ll look on eBay for a basic workstation from Dell or HPE, or suggest a used ASRock Rack or Supermicro board. It offers better fit since my past experience shows these consumer boards can be unreliable even in QVL.
