Our Brother HL-2270DW laser printer stopped working after running out of toner. Following the instructions in the user manual, I replaced the toner cartridge and still cannot get any prints. There are no warning lights on the device. I attempted troubleshooting through Settings > Devices > Printers and Scanners, selecting the printer and running the Troubleshooter before changing the cartridge. This time I encountered a Toner error after replacing the toner, so I swapped it out again and printed a small document without success. I also tried printing a test page, but the queue displayed errors next to the titles. I cleaned the printer queue, double-checked the cartridge placement and the Ready light, yet printing a test page remained impossible. The queue still showed documents with errors. I unplugged the printer for ten seconds, plugged it back in, and after a green Ready light appeared, I tried again but still failed.

I ran the troubleshooter once more and it reported that it couldn<|pad|> to identify the issue. Despite these efforts, the printer still won’t print a test page. The queue now shows the test page without any error indication. Powering off and restarting didn’t help, and the green Ready light stays on. Pressing the start button triggers a loading sound, but no action occurs. The sound fades after a brief moment.

I searched online, including the Brother website, but found no solutions. My assumption is that a reset or additional steps are needed after replacing the toner, though I can’t locate any guidance.

Suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Did you take off the seal prior to applying the fresh toner? I don’t have any information about your printer. Likely, it was a quick assumption.

Yes, the cartridge I purchased requires unwrapping it and taking off a plastic cover that safeguards the toner roller. Good question! Thanks.

Attempt a thorough restoration. This method helped when my Brother MFC laser wouldn't restart. Refer to the Brother support site:
3.1 Procedure 1
Disconnect the power cord for at least 30 seconds.
Hold the ON/OFF button firmly, then reinsert the power cord into the Brother device.
Do not release the button until the machine is fully powered on or after 15 seconds.
Repeat this action up to three times if needed.
3.2 Procedure 2
Disconnect the power cord for at least 30 seconds.
Take out the paper tray from the Brother machine.
Reattach the power cord and turn on the machine.
Once fully powered, place the paper tray back into the device.

Thank you for the responses. Even though I attempted a reboot without success, applying a Windows update later allowed the printer to function again.

When you swap a toner cartridge, the printer should detect the change and set the toner level to Full. In most Brother printers, there isn’t a real toner level sensor—it only uses the page count to indicate when the cart is low. This means it might alert you before the cart is actually empty. There’s a method to reset the toner display to Full, but before doing so with an old cartridge you suspect isn’t empty, review the printer’s instructions. Be aware it could run out after resetting the counter and you’ll still need to replace the cart. For guidance on resetting your HL-2270DW printer, watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXJrG9eRirU
