Brand new PC refusing to function properly
I collaborated with my best friend on a Micro Center trip recently to acquire his components for a new PC. Since then, the system has been unstable, experiencing crashes, BSODs, freezes, and display issues. The likely cause appears to be a GPU or its driver, as the PC fails to recognize the latest NVIDIA driver. After restarting, the driver disappears and the GPU isn't detected by the system—though the video cable remains connected. It seems the PCIe connector must be running at PCIe 4.0 speeds for the GPU riser to function properly. So far, I've verified the RTX 4080 works on my test rig, drivers install correctly, and stress tests pass. Other GPUs like GT 730 and GTX 1660 Ti also succeeded. I've set default BIOS settings, enabled optimal RAM speeds, and ensured the latest BIOS is installed. All motherboard drivers have been reinstalled, and Windows has been updated to the newest version. I'm considering disassembling the whole setup, wiping the SSDs, and rebuilding it from scratch to uncover any hidden issues. All parts were brand-new purchases from Micro Center, possibly two weeks ago. The AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Deepcool LT520 AIO G.Skill 2x32GB DDR5-6000 is paired with a Crucial P3 Plus M.2 4TB, Samsung 980 PRO 1TB M.2, and a Lian Li Q58 PSU. Windows 11 64-bit is installed. The CPU appears in HWinfo for some reason—RTX 4080 wasn't visible during installation but reappeared in Task Manager after driver update, then vanished after a restart.
It appears the problem might be related to the GPU. I’d remove it from the case and run it without the riser to check if it works. Make sure the 12VHPWR connector is fully inserted on both sides. Ideally, you’d want another system to test the GPU for consistency. HWinfo may have issues with newer hardware.
Your HWInfo seems to have issues. What is an Intel Pentium AMD Ryzen 7800X3D? You might have tried connecting it without a riser cable, as sometimes these components can be faulty.
Noted, I took out the RTX 4080 from my system and put it onto my test rig without using the riser cable. I also connected the included 12VHPWR adapter with three separate 8-pin PCIe cables instead of a single dedicated power cable like the one on my friend’s setup. I made sure the 12VHPWR connector was fully seated on both the GPU and the power supply ends.
