I bought some Faster RAM to upgrade my son's new PC for his birthday. I checked forums to see if I could fit it with the existing ADATA XPG RAM. Most people suggested 16GB at 3200Mhz is better than 32GB at 2400Mhz. The issue is that the newer RAM won't work properly unless all channels are filled with both sets together. I tried reseating the 3200 stick alone without success. Anyone know how to prevent this newer RAM from working without both sticks? My board is an ASRock Z270 Extreme4. I'm trying to understand this better, thanks. Side note: I've tested the RAM one stick at a time and only in dual-channel mode on both orientations of my board.
News to me. First time I've ever heard that speed matters more than capacity. I mean, if you never even need 16GB, ok maybe. 2400 to 3200 is not as drastic as some make it out to be, imho. Are you using 1/3 or 2/4 channels?
A quick scan of the QLV list reveals the kit isn't marked as compatible, which seems unusual since the list hasn't been refreshed in years—this offers little guidance. Updating the BIOS might be beneficial if your device hasn't been maintained recently, as memory compatibility improvements are often released.
Have you experimented with a single stick in the previously occupied memory slots? It seems the RAM is failing, and this would be a useful test. Earlier mentions suggest it's not in the QVL, but on Intel boards the QVL refers to the maximum speed the motherboard can support. This device should start up at 2400 or 2666 without issues.
On an old platform like that, it seems to be reliable. However, on my system, I often experience around 15% drops in FPS if the RAM lacks its XMP profile, which is quite significant.
Alright, well I don't want to get mean but I answered this in the OP. The RAM isn't DOA because it's running just fine when slotted WITH the older RAM, like also said above.
