I feel quite down, yet somehow calm for a reason. Those GPUs were expensive back then, but they seem much more affordable now. How long do they typically last? I’ve assembled three PCs in my life and never faced this issue. Usually I just swap them out before they fail completely.

I own a gaming laptop to keep me going while I ponder something. However, being abroad in Japan makes tech quite costly. Someone recommended upgrading to an old AMD card if possible, just to bridge the gap until I can afford a proper desktop. Still unsure if the latest models will fit my setup—she’s quite outdated. But I’ll give it a try. Come back when I’m ready. When I miss her. She only lasted four years. What happened to her?

The board should work with any modern card, but updating the BIOS is recommended for optimal performance. BIOS updates often highlight improvements like better VGA support. Cards similar to a 2070 include the RX 66x0, RTX 3060 or Arc A750 (needs rebar), with higher-end options like 3060 Ti or 6700 XT being significant upgrades. The board needs to support new GPUs, which I’m worried could cause a CPU bottleneck.

I think if I voice my concerns, maybe buying a mid-to-high tier card back then would have extended its life beyond four years. But I only play on 1080p at 144hz—nothing too demanding in that scenario. The alternatives don’t cost much either; the AMD 7600 and 6900 are about $300 each, though it’s still a significant amount of money. Still, it feels like a lot of change. I was hoping my card would be one of those that lasted around ten years and only failed once you upgraded it for something better, lol.

Sure, I understand. The CPU might be a limiting factor, but I think I'll hold off until Black Friday or after Christmas to purchase replacement components and gradually upgrade the system.

It seems you're wondering whether the issue was due to a faulty GPU or other factors like power supply or CPU overclocking. You'd rather avoid adding more components to prevent further damage.

Overclocking the CPU won't affect the card much. Back then, when buses were overclocked, it might have caused issues, but that was a long time ago. With modern CPUs, the main change is adjusting the multiplier. Some power supplies can be tougher on graphics cards, even if they're fine, but four years isn't unusual for a card. It would be great if they lasted until they become outdated and most of them do, though they’re complex with many parts that might fail. You could check it visually, like the people in videos, to spot any obvious problems.

I’m planning to upgrade my graphics card for a fresh build. I’ll likely wait until Black Friday or Cyber Monday to make the purchase. In the meantime, my current laptop still supports gaming. The options I’m looking at are the 6700XT and the RX 7600, both priced similarly in Japan and used markets. It shouldn’t be a huge jump in cost. My previous 2070 cost around $500, probably due to GPU availability issues back then.
