Board or CPU affected by the 5950x PCIe burnout?
I acquired a brand new 5950x CPU that functioned well for 13 hours before it failed. The PCIe connection burned out, and there was no GPU output directly through the CPU PCIe slot (PCIe X1 Gen 2 still operational). The CPU was brand new, but the board is refurbished ASRock Master Sli from Scan UK with a 12-month warranty. My concern is identifying the likely reason for this failure. The board appears to have melted slightly in the CPU slot, suggesting the issue may have started there. While the CPU should be replaceable, I doubt I’ll purchase another at this cost. What advice do experts give? Should I replace both components or just the CPU? What are the risks if I use an old CPU for testing? Could the board have caused the CPU to overheat without affecting itself, meaning both could be at fault?
I've been using the same PSU for three years without any problems. It was running a Corsair HX 750i with an Asus Crosshair Vi X370 at 1700MHz until I upgraded to this new motherboard and CPU. I wasn't sure if I should replace the RAM but, after some research, it looks like AMD and Asus stopped supporting the 5xxx CPU on that model. People are trying to cross-flash BIOS and fixing issues, though there are still a few problems from chipset differences (see https://www.overclock.net/threads/rog-cr.../page-2376). Eventually, I realized there might be some heat damage to the CPU socket lines, so I think I should send them back and look for another board.
i mean to be fair its not really a dick move, There is VERY limited space on the BIOS chips, and x370 was the first gen of ryzen, i dont think even they expected just how much their own product would improve and how quickly. If they had much bigger bios chips, i could see it being a dick move but supporting 3 sets of cpus, let alone the 4th with the improvements is quite difficult.
Mostly I agree, many folks got upset. AMD originally promised 3 generation support, but they didn’t keep it. Still, A320, asrock, and gigabyte all modified their BIOS to back the 5xxx series. In the end, AMD decided to stop supporting it and sent C&D those beta models when it should have been left to board developers. It would have been better if they offered a choice—either remove some older CPU support or fully back the full line of processors. Running an Athlon X950 on such a high-end board doesn’t make sense, so this decision feels like a mistake rather than a harsh one.
