I own an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X running at 3.7 GHz with a 6-core setup, paired with the MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI Micro ATX AM4 board. The system includes Silicon Power GAMING 16 GB DDR4-3200 CL16 RAM, a Crucial P3 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVMe SSD, and an EVGA SC GAMING ACX 3.0 graphics card with a GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB video module. The power unit is an EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G3 750 W, certified 80+ Gold and fully modular ATX style. Note that the RAM is excluded from this list.

Originally, I used an A520M-A Pro board with a different used PSU. I installed Windows, optimized the RAM to 3200 MHz, and mounted everything in a case with a chrome Ultra X3 1000W power supply I found at Goodwill. After turning it on, the system failed to boot consistently. Multiple attempts to troubleshoot led me to notice the CPU indicator light was illuminated.

I switched to a Ryzen 3100 model and faced similar issues. I managed to boot from USB with the 650W PSU but experienced frequent reboots during Windows installation—sometimes restarting every few seconds, sometimes after longer intervals. The system would enter BIOS for 1-3 minutes, suggesting instability beyond just the install process.

Temperatures stayed around 37°C, peaking at about 40°C when RAM was optimized to 3200 MHz. I suspect the problem might lie with the PSU or its wiring, as all components were used. The PSU I used was a chrome Ultra X3, and I’m concerned it could have damaged the internal circuitry.

I’m considering replacing the Ultra X3 and testing the 3100 separately to isolate the issue. If that doesn’t work, I might need to replace other parts one by one. I’m also thinking about getting a Ryzen G series processor to rule out two faulty components at once, but it would cost more than $100.

Any guidance on which components are likely faulty or how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

You can configure the RAM manually by adjusting the clock speed, or you can apply XMP/DOCP profiles to let the system handle it automatically.

xmp profile, though worried it might be an issue, was reset to 2666 and it restarted without any noticeable change in frequency or performance. I’ve placed the RAM in the correct slots as shown on the motherboard diagram, and I’ve tested each stick separately in A2, but the same behavior persists.

Did you refresh your bios to the newest version? Pause any updates until your setup runs smoothly. Start everything with default settings. Your 1000W PSU is actually an 840W model, which isn’t a good sign of durability. Edited October 18, 2023 by leclod

Board seems to be the main concern here. RAM wouldn’t trigger random restarts; PSU is more likely involved, though it usually only does so when under heavy load. Both the 750 G3 and 650 hive are solid options, so probably those aren’t the problem. It might help to briefly submerge the board in water after removing the CMOS battery, press the power button briefly, and clear the CMOS for about two minutes—this often resolves the issue, likely due to a short in the power button itself. Expect it to take 1–2 days to dry. If you can, try another board to check if the problem lies elsewhere; since you’re buying used, you could visit the seller’s place and test the components with their hardware. If it works there, you should probably go with their board as the CMOS issue is unlikely. Otherwise, something else might be at fault.

It’s possible it restarted in the middle, which might explain why the red light ceased. I removed the CMOS and shorted the pins but the issue persisted. I’m worried about trying to refresh the bios again so it resumes mid-update, which could brick the board. At this point, it seems like my only choice. I mainly buy used from eBay or Goodwill, so swapping boards isn’t an option. However, I might consider buying another one if that’s the problem. There are no warning lights or other signals, just a complete restart. I recently bought a speaker on Amazon to check for beeps indicating trouble, but it won’t be until tomorrow that I can work on it. After my first board problem, I was excited to see everything laid out correctly, only to find this issue. I love tinkering, but things can get costly fast.

Eventually, I checked the BIOS settings and saw that it listed the MAG B550M Bazooka version. What caught my attention was that this model doesn’t support Wi-Fi, yet the motherboard clearly does. When I checked MSI’s documentation, I found the B550m pro-vdh wifi listed there. The confusion lies in why the Bazooka BIOS appears instead of the actual Wi-Fi compatible one. Using mflash didn’t reveal the correct BIOS, and even with Flashback updates for the MSI ROM version, it still stuck on the Bazooka setup. I’ve reset the CMOS multiple times but the issue persists. Installing a Ryzen 3100 also produced the same result.
