I'm re-examining this system again. It came loaded with numerous unwanted games and browser add-ons, some of which Mozilla flagged as harmful. I want to stop the user account from installing anything and force an admin password prompt when she tries. It's proving difficult to get this set up correctly. I discovered a way to disable Windows Installer, but it affects everyone and doesn't show an admin login request—it just says the feature is disabled. Ideally, I'd expect privileges to require an admin password for everything, similar to how I manage in Ubuntu. With her account as a regular user, most system changes are blocked until she enters the admin password. I'm hitting a barrier that seems to apply only to certain users or software. I need everything to stay on this local machine, just like Ubuntu does, without relying on external tools or subscriptions. I'm struggling to determine if this is feasible on Windows 10.

Why choose Ubuntu? Linux programs are available for books, Firefox is the default browser, and Cricut offers Linux-based software. One host of "Linux out Loud" mentioned it without issue. You could run it in VirtualBox on Windows, disable the menu bar, and switch to full screen. Then search for Linux Cricut tools, book applications, and fun games.

Unfortunately, there’s no Cricut program for Linux. Even their iOS and Android versions have reliability issues, and sometimes they don’t function properly with certain models. A friend who’s into Linux has experienced the same challenges, which is why his wife uses a Windows laptop. There are programs that can generate files compatible with Cricut, but they’re not user-friendly for someone like me who isn’t comfortable navigating non-Windows interfaces. I really wish I could simply replace everything and install Kubuntu, but it’s not a practical solution here. The Linux version of Cricut isn’t supported, and it might not work on all devices. The only Linux-compatible software I’ve found was last updated in 2016 and tested with just one Cricut model and its firmware. Sending SVG files works, but it involves more complex steps than the usual click-click-cutting process. Running a VM on Ubuntu isn’t ideal either—it can get messy with malware and unnecessary software, just like inside a container. While Linux itself won’t be affected, the virtual environment adds its own set of problems. I really appreciate Ubuntu; it runs smoothly on many machines, including my daily laptop and even my mom’s.

Configure the virtual machine with Windows, perform updates, remove unnecessary programs, complete the setup, and generate a backup. When issues arise, restore from the snapshot quickly—within minutes via simple clicks. This approach seems to be the most effective right now.

I don’t reside there; the PC must be disconnected and sent to me. It’s better to resolve the issue near its origin to avoid future complications. The main problem started when scammers pushed her to set up remote access tools. I need to stop such situations from recurring.

You can configure Windows to permit installation and execution of only apps from the Store. This ensures that older programs remain functional, while any new executables must be added through the Store starting from the time the setting is activated. Only Store-based applications can be installed or run, excluding previously installed software. https://www.howtogeek.com/744621/how-to-...indows-11/

I realized I missed finding that option when using the user account, so I had to check the admin account instead. At the time, I didn’t have the admin password and probably didn’t search there. Plus, the FF extension to restrict addons and downloads means she’ll just have to deal with what’s already installed. I’m expecting some complaints from her daughter, but this is exactly what she wanted.
