Black screen persists despite performing DDU, NVINSTALL and rolling back drivers.
Hello, I understand the problems with black screens and GPU fans on NVIDIA drivers from version 572. I’ve received all the updates, but after installing three DDUs and rolling back to versions 566.14, 566.36, and 565.90, the issue persisted even after October and November. Once the RTX 5000 Series was released, black screens became unavoidable, regardless of my efforts with DDU and a full installation. It appears some residual issues remain from the 572 drivers that DDU can’t fully remove. My RTX 4090 is now causing frustration, with black screens appearing both before and after GPU fan activity at full speed. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Might it be necessary to return the card for a warranty claim, as I have until October 2026? Any additional insights would be appreciated. Thank you!
You might attempt a fresh installation of Windows, but if that fails, consider removing the GPU.
Have you considered updating to the newest version and then using older drivers instead of DDU? You might also run an OCCT test to check if the card has a simple stress-related fault. GPU fans reaching maximum speed usually indicate a thermal problem; what are the temperatures of the 4090?
I haven't attempted this before because I heard there are temperature reading problems with the new version. I'll wait for the next official driver update and try your advice. Temperatures are within acceptable ranges—my system is a Gigabyte OC 4090, so the heatsink is more than sufficient. Idle temps sit around 32°C and rise to 60-65°C during gaming or rendering. Memory stays below 72°C. For now, I reconnected the 12VHPWR cable. Some users report issues with Cablemods cables, so I purchased a Corsair compatible version that matches my PSU. Each of the 8-pin cables can handle up to 300W. Next time this occurs, I'll install the latest drivers, run DDU, and then revert to older ones. If the issue continues, I'll swap the PSU cable to check if that's the root cause.
You might want to explore older versions manually. Check the Nvidia site for RTX 4090 drivers. Avoid complicated methods—just install the simpler ones. Current drivers should work better than the newer ones.
What operating system version are you using? Also, have you installed the Nvidia software (it’s not required)? I’m on Windows 566.33, but I didn’t install the app because it caused issues—no full black screen, just occasional problems like "Nvidia driver crash." I’ve never seen this before and haven’t since. You might try different drivers, such as 550, and my 4070 works fine with the app, though only minor bugs appear. It really depends on your Windows version.
Hey everyone, thanks for your feedback. I finally figured it out. I had been hoping for at least a month before checking again if the issue returned. What I did was just reinsert the 12VHPWR cable, and since May 1st there were no problems—no black screen and the GPU fans ran at full speed. I also installed a second NVME card a few months ago and had to remove the GPU, which might have affected how the cable connected. I still used the old 536 drivers, so it's unclear if the black screen problems have been fixed with the new ones.
