Black screen - can't find CMOS
Black screen - can't find CMOS
Hi everyone,
This is my initial message. I'm usually quite comfortable with computers, but I'm encountering some issues now.
My friend's laptop (Medion S14409 -MD62133) appears to function normally—power, lights, fans are working—but the screen remains black. It's difficult to diagnose a black display, so I can't access BIOS/UEFI. I've tried various solutions:
- removed the battery (still holds charge)
- took out the RAM strips (no issues)
- removed the internal M2 SSD (functioned in another PC)
- connected an external monitor (no success)
I'm trying to remove the motherboard or CMOS battery, but I haven't found it. I've disassembled many components without success and am hoping that replacing the CMOS battery will resolve the problem. Alternatively, if that doesn't work, I'm considering driver issues for the GPU or a faulty GPU.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Did you check with an external monitor? Did the laptop power up?
Hi, thank you for your message. As mentioned in your post, I connected the laptop to an external monitor using HDMI, but it didn't work properly and there was no image displayed on the external screen.
So.. some extra information. Have been trying some more and found what looks like a reset-button on the laptop's oustide/casing. A small pinhole with a rounded arrow beside it. Similair to the hole you'd find on a smart phone to open the SIM-tray. Used this to try and reset the CMOS. No idea if id did much. It didn't solve the problem of the black screen. ANy help is appreciated.
The power indicator on the laptop's side lights up, showing it's functioning properly. Both fans are also operating. My intuition told me there might be an issue with the BIOS/UEFI reading from the incorrect boot device or possibly a software-related problem stemming from a Windows update that led to the black screen. I experienced something similar with my desktop, which turned out to be a GPU driver problem.
I attempted to start from an external bootable USB drive, but it didn't work. The screen remains black.
