I've observed similar corrosion on capacitors in older systems from around 2005—usually appearing as clumps near the base or along edges. This spread pattern has settled into the heatsink, suggesting it isn't firmly attached.

Could it really be salt? I wasn't very focused on science, but I learned that heat can lead to salt formation in certain chemical processes.

From my perspective, salts are used in making capacitors. These devices include electrolytes. They aren’t what plants need, but the liquid inside does contain salt. It’s conceivable that bad capacitors might release salts when they malfunction. The salt isn’t generated by heat—it’s already present within the capacitors from the start. Still, I doubt it comes from a defective unit since the ones shown appear intact.

It seems the capacitors probably don't expel refined table salt. It's more likely they're made of styrofoam, as discussed before.
