Before updating the BIOS on your ASUS Maximus Viii Hero motherboard, you can remove the CMOS from within the BIOS settings. Since you're currently overclocked, clearing the CMOS is typically necessary to proceed with the BIOS update. The PC does not need to be turned off to access the CMOS clear button on the motherboard; you can clear it while the system is running.

you can wipe the system yet it's possible to restore the bios to its original settings by reversing any overclock adjustments

I could reset the system by undoing any overclock adjustment, but clearing the CMOS from within the BIOS settings is an option. Alternatively, you might need to press the CMOS reset button on the motherboard.

when operating the system in this setup, there is a chance of damaging it permanently and rendering the board ineffective. consult your motherboard manual for instructions on resetting the BIOS to its original configuration.

No need to reset CMOS. Updating BIOS clears all your profiles and settings, bringing everything back to the standard.

BigBoomBoom :
No need to clear CMOS. Updating BIOS clears all profiles and settings back to defaults automatically.
I also learned about an instability issue, but can I reset directly to defaults inside the BIOS?

Simply load the default or something from the profile.
