Bios fails to recognize the new M.2 SSD device.
I own an HP Elitedesk 800 G1 equipped with a Haswell (4th gen i7) processor. It features an m.2 slot but only supports AHCI m.2 drives with legacy bootrom compatibility. This model was released just before the introduction of NvMe storage solutions. I searched eBay and discovered a used Samsung SM951 that lacks NvMe labeling on the drive, paired with a 256GB SSD that functions as a bootable media. It's worth noting there are two variants of the SM951 m.2 SSD—one AHCI-compatible version without NvMe markings and another with NvMe support. NvMe drives can still work but typically only serve as secondary storage. I’m unsure if this issue relates to your setup, but given the age of the laptop and its original inclusion of an AHCI drive, it’s likely the reason the NvMe unit isn’t recognized. Other options include older Samsung XP941 128GB drives or larger models that adhere to AHCI standards. For a device this vintage, a modern 2.5" SSD with onboard cache would be a practical upgrade. The primary motivation for seeking the AHCI drive was to use a 2.5" HDD instead of a standard SSD.
