Haven't heard much about Mulvad but it seems nice. It's more expensive than PIA though, and I am not sure it offers connections to other countries, but it has a free trial so you can just try it out if you want.

It seems more probable you configured it incorrectly or they lack a kill switch, allowing the leak to occur. The alerts likely originated from the VPN or the copyright owner, not your ISP.
