Best CPU for Gigabyte B760 D2H DDR5 ?
You're using a Gigabyte B760 D2H DDR5 motherboard with an i5 12400F processor. For upgrading the CPU, consider a compatible i5 or i7 model that fits your motherboard's socket type and supports DDR5.
What was the goal? Either gaming or productivity. I haven’t checked thermal performance, but it seems simple enough, so for gaming I’d go with a 13600K/14600K, or a 13700/14700 non-K for work. A strong graphics card would be needed to really feel the difference in games, even with the 13th/14th generation K processors being a solid improvement.
You can fit any 12th or 14th generation Intel consumer CPU. I wouldn’t risk a 125W model, but a 65W one seems fine. What’s your purpose? Are you playing games? The premium price for a locked chipset makes sense if you want security. Has the B760 changed to allow overclocking?
You might need an upgrade because the CPU released two years ago could no longer keep up with current demands. The original purchase might not have covered the latest performance or features available today.
These models use the older 12th-gen cache setup and perform much worse in games compared to the i5-K processors. Upgrading from a 12400 isn't worth it unless you need more productivity, thanks to the 13500's eight E-cores. The only notable exception seems to be the i5-14600 non-K, which now has the updated cache and should handle gaming reasonably well.
My current workload requires more than 12400F. The 12700 model is significantly pricier, but I bought the 12400F CPU last year.
