Beginner in OCing – looking to upgrade with a motherboard that accommodates your 16 GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
Hello, I have a few questions about OC that I'm really unfamiliar with.
I'm using an Ivy Bridge motherboard with an i5-3470 processor and a stock cooler.
My recent purchase of a GTX 1070 caused it to bottleneck, which was expected.
I've started saving up to buy a i5-6600k with a better cooler.
I know Skylake isn't designed for DDR3 memory, but some boards support it.
Maybe someone can suggest one?
I'd prefer to keep my current 16 GB RAM since the upgrade from 3 to 4 hasn't really convinced me yet.
I'm curious about which motherboards are suitable for overclocking this processor and if there are any limitations or issues I should be aware of due to my specific hardware setup.
Your 16GB of DDR3 might not work with these boards. The Skylake motherboards that support DDR3 only back DDR3L (low voltage). Your RAM is likely 1.5V or 1.65V, but the Skylake boards require 1.2V. You should wait a bit longer and upgrade to DDR4 or choose a better Ivy Bridge CPU.
