Beginner here, thinking about how much to invest in future improvements
I set up my current build in late 2021 using parts I gathered over the past year. At that time, I focused on a work PC with some gaming, keeping costs reasonable but maintaining quality components. The system features an AMD Ryzen 7 3700x processor paired with an MSI B450 graphics card and a mid-range motherboard. Recently, I upgraded the graphics from a GTX 1660 Super to a RTX 5060 Ti, which I purchased with extra funds after enjoying BG3. After playing for the first time, I noticed some heat concerns, though I hadn’t experienced issues before. Before buying, I visited a local microcenter to verify compatibility and ask questions. The staff member offered general advice but focused mainly on the NZXT 510i model, suggesting it was acceptable with a flat front. They recommended adding extra fans to manage temperature, emphasizing that upgrading the case should be justified if you plan a full overhaul. My current motherboard only has a PCIe 3.0 slot for the GPU and lacks modern AM4 support, making long-term reliability uncertain. While it’s still functional, newer models offer better performance and stability. Since I haven’t encountered bottlenecks yet, I’m unsure if pushing further is wise. Should I invest in a new build using my recent GPU, or should I concentrate on upgrading the CPU and possibly RAM? If the latter, what aspects should I explore?
Welcome to the discussions! If you're satisfied with how your system is performing, I recommend sticking with it. Upgrading should come when your computer can't keep up with your requirements. It seems you're doing well. The 3700X remains a solid CPU and can make the most of the 5060 Ti in many scenarios—especially if you focus on graphics. You'd probably only hit CPU limits if you were tweaking settings to achieve extremely high frame rates.
Thanks for the warm welcome and the guidance! I still haven’t really pushed it much yet—otherwise, my software experience is smooth. However, I’m a bit concerned about CPU temperatures lately. Back when the front vents were small and tucked away, things were fine. Now the temps are a bit high, and I don’t want to risk making quick decisions that could force me to rush a new PC setup. When I finally decide to upgrade, I’d like to take my time, pick the best parts when they’re cheapest, and have flexibility without being without a functional machine if anything goes wrong. I’m trying a few fixes to see what helps—since it’s been a while since I cleaned the PC thoroughly, it might need more thermal paste on the CPU. I’m also considering getting a Thermalright Peerless Assassin (the one that came with the CPU originally), though some people say it’s not ideal and might be a step down. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, I might have to think about a complete rebuild with a case offering better airflow.
