It has been inactive for several months... currently there are about 1,000 players online on PC.
I've always favored the BF4 play style compared to BF:H, though that's personal. Generally, BF4 leans toward a slower, more strategic approach that fits larger maps with bigger groups and extended rounds. BF:H is quicker, action-packed, and works better on smaller maps with fewer players and shorter matches. BF4 still offers plenty of content to develop, so I believe it will remain relevant for some time.
You're considering whether the standard edition or the premium edition with DLCs is sufficient for your needs.
It might not be the most popular view, but I prefer BFH more. Matching people for a good server has been challenging recently, possibly linked to my location (Argentina), though both games have many active players. If you enjoy BF4, just purchase it and play—it offers plenty of enjoyable servers.
