I struggle to surpass the initial stage of a simple campaign on the most straightforward setting. What makes this game so challenging? Why do people find it so hard to complete every mission on expert mode?
Uncertainty about whether tutorials or early campaigns are enough. Have you ever tried other similar games, such as Might and Magic? Or any game where decisions truly affect the world map, not just battles? Waiting and collecting troops is generally poor strategy.
I didn't gather forces and wait around. Many maps have around 20 turn limits, which made it hard anyway. I just summoned a hexagon full of units and then rushed everything at the enemy castle. I stopped recruiting any more units afterward so I could beat the time limit. It's frustrating this way.
Yeah, I used to play HoMM4 a lot but also relied heavily on cheats in several campaigns (especially the undead ones in the conqueror campaign). It's tough to win otherwise.
