Motherboard power cells can lose charge over time even without use. If left unused for a while, they may drain gradually. This can lead to performance drops or shutdowns if the voltage falls too low. It’s not uncommon for such components to lose capacity after extended periods. If the battery is completely empty, you might need to replace it or check for other causes of failure. Reviving a dead battery is tricky and often requires professional help.

A PC may operate without the CMOS battery, though modifications in the BIOS will reset to standard configurations. The CMOS battery may gradually lose charge but can be swapped quickly—new ones are available for 5 to 7 dollars.

The motherboard batteries are essentially button cell batteries. If you're unsure about their condition, simply remove them, verify the specific model, and purchase a new one—since they're inexpensive.

For instance, if I enabled XMP, it would simply shut down during startup.

They're typical batteries, the same type you'd use in your watch. You should be able to find them easily at any nearby store.

Yes, they are found in most convenience stores. Bring the battery from the motherboard with you to locate a matching one.

They are common CR2032 batteries found everywhere. The device runs when no other power is available, such as when the computer is fully disconnected. If the computer stays plugged in and the power switch isn’t turned off, the supply’s 5V idle voltage takes over, extending the battery life.
