I'm almost ready to purchase it, though I've heard Arkham City is superior.

I purchased it since I liked Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. It's rumored that Arkham Origins has many more bugs than the earlier titles, but if you ignore those issues, the game should feel quite solid.

Origins is a messy collection of poor decisions, essentially a quick cash grab by WB. The initial two titles, Asylum and City, were a collaboration between Rocksteady UK and WB Seattle. Both required several years of development and delivered impressive results. The next planned entry in the lineup was Arkham Knight, which has been pushed back until early next year. WB retains the franchise rights and preferred to skip the gap between City and Knight, opting instead for a fully in-house version from WB Montreal. Unfortunately, this approach didn’t work out well.

Firstly, the narrative fell apart as WB ignored established story details from earlier games. I’ll skip spoilers here. They also repeated the same villain ending for three consecutive titles, despite having previously sold Origins with the promise of a different antagonist.

Additionally, there were numerous technical issues—bugs that made certain areas inaccessible or required glitches to navigate. AI behavior was erratic, often breaking patterns essential for predator sequences. The most problematic issue was PC-specific, particularly with the QuickTime event where the final boss couldn’t be defeated using standard controls.

While a 360 controller now improves playability for many, not all PC owners have access. It’s unclear if official fixes exist, but some players managed to overcome obstacles by modifying files. In short, try playing Asylum, City, and Knight when they arrive, but avoid supporting Origins with WB.
