Yesterday I purchased a 6700K with a Be Quiet Dark Rock TF, and I've set both fans at 100% while keeping the CPU temperature around 37~40 degrees idle. Isn't this approach acceptable? I've tried overclocking before but haven't succeeded consistently. Even at 4.5Ghz and 1.35V it doesn't work. Some tests in Prime95 stop functioning, and my CPU gets very high temperatures. I attempted to use the coolpaste that comes with the cooler, but it didn't help.

Initially, which motherboard are you using?
It's best not to rely on Cooler Master thermal paste; it might help temporarily but isn't suitable for the long run.
I suggest using Arctic MX-4 thermal paste.

weberdarren97 :
First, what kind of motherboard do you have?
Second, avoid using Cooler Master thermal paste. It's fine for short-term use until your new paste arrives, but it won't be helpful long-term.
I suggest Arctic MX-4 thermal paste.
I didn't realize that. Coolermaster sent me a sample of the Mastergel pro, but I don't have Artic Silver—should I just stick with the one that came with the Be Quiet cooler?
My motherboard is a Z170A Krait X3. It's odd that my CPU runs so quietly with a Be Quiet Dark Rock TF with both fans at 100%?

vinootje, What is your ambient temperature? Which temperature monitoring utility? Which version of Prime95? Do NOT run any versions of Prime95 later than 26.6. Here's why: Core i 2nd through 6th Generation CPU's have AVX (Advanced Vector Extension) instruction sets. Recent versions of Prime95, such as 28.9, run AVX code on the Floating Point Unit (FPU) math coprocessor, which produces unrealistically high temperatures. The FPU test in the utility AIDA64 shows similar results. Prime95 v26.6 produces temperatures on 3rd through 6th Generation processors more consistent with 2nd Generation, which also have AVX instructions, but do not suffer from thermal extremes due to having a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader and a significantly larger Die. Please download Prime95 version 26.6 - http://windows-downloads-center.blogspot...5-266.html Run only Small FFT’s for 10 minutes. Use Core Temp to measure your temperatures - http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp Your Core temperatures will test 10 to 20C lower with v26.6 than with v28.9. CompuTronix: vinootje, What is your ambient temperature? Like 25 degrees Which temperature monitoring utility? I am using MSI Afterburner Which version of Prime95? Well even with prime95 running for like 10 minutes. MSI Afterburner and HWMonitor says my cpu is currently close to 90 degrees. i tryed to touch the heatpipes of the Be Quiet Dark Rock TF even at the closest point where they meet the baseplate it is anything except hot. it feels like 20-30degrees? so i think here goes it wrong the heat is not getting transfered to the cooler properly. i am sure i did remove the peeloffplastic, well i can try some Artic Silver MX4 but if that not works i am afraid i should pick a different cooler?

Good probability there's too much or too little thermal compound, only need a dab about the size of a grain of rice in there

Yesterday i bought a 6700K with a Be Quiet Dark Rock TF. Right now both fans are at 100% and the cpu is around 37~40 degrees idle. Isn't this a reasonable temperature? I've tried overclocking before but always fail. Even at 4.5Ghz 1.35V it doesn't work. Some tests in Prime95 stop and my cpu gets very hot. I tried refreshing the coolpaste but it didn't help much. I'm using Coolermaster Mastergel Pro. Maybe use the coolpaste that comes with the cooler? It seems like you might not have used the best overclocker. On the positive side, 1.35V is close to the stock voltage for your CPU, giving you some flexibility. You can safely raise it up to about 1.4V to stabilize your OC at 4.5. I wouldn't exceed 1.4, but reaching 4.5 should be possible within that range.

And revise the bios. That CPU had an issue with it.

So yesterday I purchased a 6700K with a Be Quiet Dark Rock TF. Right now both fans are at full speed and the CPU temperature is between 37 and 40 degrees. Isn't that a bit too hot?

I attempted overclocking, but it hasn't worked consistently. Even at 4.5Ghz and 1.35V it doesn't function properly. Some tests in Prime95 stopped working and my CPU reached very high temperatures. I tried refreshing the coolpaste, but it didn't help much. I'm using Coolermaster Mastergel Pro. Maybe using the coolpaste that comes with the cooler would be better?

It seems like you didn't get the optimal overclocker. On the positive side, 1.35V is close to the stock voltage for your CPU, giving you some flexibility. You can safely raise it up to around 1.4V to stabilize your overclock at 4.5Ghz. I wouldn't exceed 1.4, but reaching 4.5 should be possible within that range.

However, the issue is that I'm not able to go much higher than stock. At 4GHz I'm already seeing 40°C idle with maximum fans, and 90°C under extreme Prime95 load. Personally, I think this is too high compared to what others achieve with similar setups—my 4.5Ghz CPU runs at a max of 40°C idle with full fans, while I'm at 90°C under heavy stress.
