The documents are kept on the internet. Just need a web browser to view them.

The files are kept online, but with a Microsoft (Office 365) subscription you can expect them to maintain availability according to their terms. However, it still depends on the user to create backups. You're looking for a free Linux solution from an open-source project that could achieve this. Let me know if this clarifies your goal.

Instead of converting files to .docx, you could keep them in their original format and use MegaSync for backup.

I think you're looking to connect your 365 Drive. If you're using GNOME, you should be able to log in through Online Accounts in settings and see it appear as a drive. If that doesn't work, check the GitHub link for the solution. For a paid, easier option, visit the InsyncQ site.

Gather all files and store them on your computer. If you're considering a client with automatic sync, Mega is an excellent choice.
