It's only beginning to appear. With an i3 and 8GB RAM, it seems the system might be handling it without much trouble so far. I'm uncertain about the cause. Could there be a way to identify what's running it? Otherwise, I might need to remove the drive physically.

No, I haven't tried to disable your AV software.

I thought it might be fine so far, but it began after installing AVG PC TuneUp. I plan to remove that software and maybe turn off AVG completely. I’m not sure how often it scans, so it could have just reached my storage recently. Probably installing a hot-swap hard drive bay will be the next step. I wonder if my motherboard supports HD Hot-Swap—though it’s not clear. Even if it doesn’t, I’m currently stuck on GTAV and would appreciate some insight. Spybot didn’t find much other than tracking cookies. The drive hasn’t been accessed in a while, so maybe it’s safe now? It’s frustrating though—it causes the game to freeze briefly every few seconds.
