Ran a 12600k for six months without any problems. Updated the BIOS to F10D about a week ago, and everything worked fine with the 12600k and PA120 cooler. Added a 13700k on the same board, keeping the same RAM and cooler in the F10D setup. The CPU voltage reading on the Z register is between 1.4-1.5V, but in-game temperatures drop to low 80s. Running R23 causes immediate 100°C temps. Looking for solutions to adjust the CPU voltage and bring temperatures back in range.
Look into the early 0x104 microcode using a Google search. Some motherboards let you reach this through the BIOS. Latest BIOS versions activate Intel Undervolt Protection, which turns off CPU voltage regulation. The added power isn't required. It raises CPU temperatures significantly.
I configured it on microcode 104 and can now run R23 at all cores at 5287mhz while staying under 100c with slight throttling. It took some adjustments to the undervolt settings on the core and cache, but performance has improved significantly—idle temps are around 30°C and gaming is up to 60°C now. I'm checking stability to confirm it's reliable before pushing further, and this air cooler is performing well for its price of $35.
Have you adjusted the CPU E Cache setting in ThrottleStop? It could lower power use slightly and help avoid thermal throttling. Running Cinebench on a 13700K usually forces most air coolers to their maximum. It’s not worth the extra cost if you don’t run full load tests daily. Can the BIOS set BCLK to an exact 100.000 MHz? I prefer clean, even numbers.
I haven’t altered the CPU cache at all. I’ll try it and observe the results. The R23 benchmarks were mainly checking stability and ensuring I could maintain high scores without throttling. At stock I was getting 14-18k and immediately throttled when starting a R23 run. Now I’m consistently achieving 30,000-31,000 mc in R23 and only reaching around 100 c at the end. If I push the CPU core or page cache further, R23 will crash on me as well, just like with games. I’ll need to look into the BCLK settings in the BIOS. I doubt I can modify it since I’m using a B760 gigabyte board, but who knows?
