the main distinction lies in the chipset: x570 offers gen 4 lanes while b550 provides gen 3. however, on the b550, the lanes connected to the cpu are still gen 4. if you don’t require those extra lanes, b550 performs just as well. which boards are you considering? the b550 e and x570 e seem overpriced with no unique advantages. For the b550, the tomahawk, mortar, strix f, aorus pro, a pro, and steel legend all work well. With the x570, tomahawk and tuf are solid, and the x570-p is also decent though it misses some features. Avoid the xt chips—go with the 3700x or 3900x—and if your GPU supports nvec (like a 1650 or better), opt for a 3600 which will still run games smoothly.
For pure gaming, opt for an i5-10600K or a 3700X. The 3800XT isn’t worth it and the 3900X offers no advantage over the 3700X despite its extra cores. Streaming work should ideally run on your GPU, especially if you have a Turing-based one (1650 Super and newer). The B550 handles everything like the X570 but lacks PCIe 4.0 lanes, making it less ideal for multiple SSDs.
