I was browsing the Build my Build forum area and noticed many suggestions favoring B550 boards over B450. The main distinction seems to be that B450 supports PCIe 2.0 lanes while B550 offers 3.0 lanes. Beyond that, I’m not sure about other differences. Should I spend an additional $25–50 on a new B550 motherboard instead of a B450 one when upgrading to a third or fourth generation CPU? Also, since I can update the BIOS with my 2200g, that’s not a concern.
The B550 doesn't accept the AGESA standard for the 2200G, which means it won't function properly. Most B550 boards perform much better in VRM mode than B450 models. They also support Gen 4 lanes connected to the CPU, but unfortunately, they still can't work with a 2200G chipset.
Typically most B550 boards feature enhanced VRMs—the parts that supply power to the CPU. These components tend to work more efficiently and dissipate heat better across the majority of B550 motherboards. The B550 also supports splitting the PCI-E X16 slot into two PCI-E X8 slots, a capability shared with the X470 and X570 models, which sets it apart from the B450. However, this feature depends on the manufacturer's design choices, and only a few B550 boards actually implement it. Additionally, many B550 boards now include improved integrated audio options such as ALC1200 or ALC1220 instead of older models like ALC887/ALC892. You might also notice more USB 10G and 5G speeds on the back, along with enhanced connectivity like 2.5G Ethernet or higher-quality Wi-Fi (AC, dual antennas, Bluetooth).
For Zen 2 most B450 boards come with it included now. If the model displays "Ryzen 3000 Easy," that confirms it. MSI's top B450 boards include Zen 2 by default. For Zen 3, it varies by manufacturer—some may add support while others might not. The B550 will need a BIOS update to enable it.
