B450 Tomahawk paired with Ryzen 5800x
I'm currently dealing with a Ryzen 3600 that's showing pin issues, and now I have some extra cash to fix it. I'm considering the 5800X because it looks available often and offers a solid upgrade. I noticed my motherboard, B450 Tomahawk non max edition, has the beta driver for newer CPUs, so I wanted to find out if anyone has made the switch and what their experience was. How is your setup performing with the beta BIOS? Just doing some research before making a decision. Thanks!
The B450 Tomahawk stands out as one of the top models in its category, and I recommend holding off until more information becomes available.
Beta versions are generally reliable to use. It's best to wait until the official release. MSI tends to update slowly, so patience is key.
I’d like to try something new since the Ryzen 5 3600 has had issues with damaged pins and only one RAM slot is available now. I’m stuck in single-channel mode and it’s frustrating. If I ever need to swap CPUs, I really want an upgrade.
No, there might be trade-offs when using beta BIOS (depends on the board). Certain functions or ports could be turned off because of a newer chip in the beta version. Some boards offered better early support, possibly fewer problems. Keep both if you encounter update issues or BIOS problems. You might also consider returning the CPU if it didn’t work or didn’t meet your expectations after trying an update.
Welcome to the discussion board! The "Beta BIOS" is the sole choice for your motherboard. Traditionally, a beta BIOS means it behaves unpredictably and carries a chance of problems. You might encounter missing features like certain graphics settings in the BIOS menu, or you could lose support for older CPUs if your system becomes unstable and you need to go back to an earlier BIOS version using a previous CPU model.
According to AMD's recent announcement about their decision to discontinue B450 support for Ryzen 5000 chips: "Choosing one of these beta BIOSes will likely end support for older CPUs." "Only specific beta BIOS options will allow a forward upgrade route for AMD Ryzen Processors with Zen 3. Updating back to an older BIOS version won’t be accepted." "These BIOS versions are reserved for customers who have confirmed their Zen 3 CPU purchase, reducing the risk of flashing the wrong chip." "Beta BIOSes for different boards might not be offered when Zen 3 is launched." "AMD still suggests using a motherboard from the 500-series with a Zen 3 CPU for the best performance."
I don’t have direct experience with a B450/X470 board running Zen 3, but the B450 Tomahawk seems reliable. Upgrading to Zen 3 shouldn’t cause major issues. No, this isn’t about losing all functionality; it’s more like "Limited BIOS" versus "Beta BIOS" for B450/X470 with Zen 3 support.
Choosing one of these beta BIOS versions might eliminate compatibility with earlier CPUs. The select beta options will allow a single-direction upgrade for AMD Ryzen Processors running Zen 3, and reverting to an older BIOS won’t work. This applies especially to the 400 chipset—previous CPUs are only viable if you have support for versions up to 1000 or 2000, not 3000.
It functions properly for me. 5800x on MSI B450 Tomahawk (not at maximum). The red CPU indicator stays lit continuously. No problems encountered thus far. Beta BIOS version is available on the MSI website.
