B450 or B550 paired with 5900x graphics card and GTX 1080 GPU
You're considering whether to go with a 450 or 550 mainboard for your upcoming 5900X. Given the price difference and the fact that AM5 will require a new board in a couple of years, it seems the 550 might be worth the investment if you plan to upgrade your CPU again. The benchmarks suggest minimal PCIe differences, so the choice hinges on future needs and budget. Based on your current setup and likely next steps, the 550 could offer better long-term value.
I’d choose a B550 board for improved performance in the heat. Upgrading to another Ryzen CPU would mean switching to AM5. I suggest the B550 Tommahawk or B550-F gaming models. Borg $160 boards with excellent VRMS can comfortably support a 5900x processor.
B550 offers superior power delivery for high-end components like the 5900X. Consider your software needs when deciding between B550 and B450 for a PC with a GTX1080.
PC will serve as the main tool for coding, video production (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop), gaming, and live streaming.
I’d consider the B550 instead, mainly because of the load capacity it offers for the VRMs—extra quality and cooling are essential. A higher-end B450 could work, but it would likely fall into the same price range as a B550 Tomahawk, similar to what @Downkey suggested, which seems perfect.
The B450F gaming setup isn't great. The B550F offers a significant improvement, almost reaching the top quality for its cost.
Thanks for the assistance! The b550 tomahawk isn't really that costly. I believe this would make a solid choice as my mainboard.
I purchased the PC four years ago with a 1080 and a 7700K, now I really want to upgrade to a new CPU, specifically the 5900X. When the 3080 comes back, I’ll also get that. It looks like a solid plan for me.
