You’re starting out with PC building and want a Ryzen 5 3600 setup. A solid choice under $120 is the MSI MEG 550M or similar budget motherboards. They offer good value and support for Zen 2. Regarding BIOS updates, some boards ship without full compatibility—just flash the bios after installation to ensure proper recognition. You can definitely flash the BIOS without a CPU installed if you have the necessary tools and a working system.

Do you need a system right now ? If no I just recommend waiting for b550 because it will be guaranteed to support zen 3 AGESA code

Wait for B550. If you require one immediately, consider MSI B450 mortar max.

Basically, what @gloop said; there are a few MSI boards that have guaranteed BIOS support. There's more than just that one, I think it's all of the MAX boards but you'd have to do a little research to make sure. I don't really agree with waiting for B550 though, there's likely nothing on it you'll need.

Or it's the tomahawk, but based on the pricing for both, they both feature a 6+2 phase design. It seems like either 3 or 4 power stages, making them very high-quality options similar to what the B450 offers.

I usually choose the mortar because of its compact size and the additional m.2 port.

It's accurate that all maximum boards come with support for Zen 2 by default.

I understand and it tends to be more affordable based on my observations, though it varies by what the OP discovers for these costs.

I’m also thinking about purchasing the Ryzen 5 3600. I was planning to get the MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX ATX AM4 board, but it’s currently unavailable. I’m holding off on that too and hoping for the B550. Like others, I believe waiting is a smart move. For future upgrades, the B550 could be a better choice if you plan to replace your CPU later.

I installed my Ryzen 5 3600 the previous week. I purchased a Gigabyte X570 UD motherboard for 14,000 INR (about 189 USD). It’s the most affordable X570 board available, with some nice features—like you don’t have to install the CPU to update the BIOS; just use USB, and it includes PCIe 4.0. I chose the Nvidia 1650 graphics card because it’s great for 1080p gaming.
