AW plans to reduce quick-scoping efforts
In my view (without much real experience with CoD), the snipers are like AKs in CS. They're really effective once you get the hang of them. Don't think it's easy to land 53 and 4 CQC with a sniper. Those clips you see online come from a bunch of poor-quality games. It's amusing to watch Hutch stream, but he struggles with CSGO overall, yet he shares some solid moments. Beginner viewers might mistake his performance for better than it actually is.
Black Ops 1 remained viable with ranking systems for quickscoping clans, even though Quickscoping demands skill. It brought fresh energy to the game. If I were feeling overwhelmed by too many sniping moments, I’d grab an AR and start clearing people... there wasn’t much imbalance in CoD titles aside from one-man forces and grenade launchers.
Initial assessment was mostly about timing, not much skill. Quick scoping relied on aim assist, which is necessary for console players using controllers. Disabling aim assist makes quick scoping impossible because the system defaults to it. This happens since aim assist is enabled by default for everyone. Getting the timing right and aiming near the target would result in a clean hit. Quickscoping is essentially a feature for console players. I’m hoping the latest version fails like the previous one did. I’m also hoping the series survives and something new emerges from this situation... but given how valuable this franchise is, it won’t be easy.
Understanding the scope requires some expertise... but this version is likely to perform even worse than the last one.
I don't believe everyone grasps the issues with reducing quickscoping in CoD. Many fans of the genre, including myself, have stopped engaging with MW2 or even Black Ops 2, likely because they've grown tired of unnecessary content and are focusing on competitive play or quickscoping. Right now, people choose the game based on its style—either for competition or for quickscoping. If quickscoping is limited, those who rely on it lose market share, including fans who would have bought the game solely for that reason. Even older titles like MW, MW2, WaW, and BO1/2 still attract players. With Halo MCC launching and more pros joining, the competitive community—especially on Xbox—is shifting toward MCC rather than CoD. This could mean CoD loses a significant portion of its audience, potentially benefiting Halo in the long term. I think Activision is missing out on both quickscoping enthusiasts and professional players. These two groups together likely represent over half of a CoD fanbase. If you don't see it, wait for MCC and the new CoD releases; we'll know which will endure. I foresee CoD fading on Xbox, though it might survive on PC and PS4. But with Halo’s resurgence, Halo 2 and 3 could reignite competition and keep shooters strong on Xbox for years.
We also reviewed the scope on the PC. The aim assist isn’t as effective as you expect. The skill gap in clan matches would have been significantly smaller. I used to compete against top-ranked teams, and I actually crushed the #2 team with my friends—lol.
