Absolutely, a dedicated front end for gaming would make sense, especially since more Windows games are running on Linux these days.

Developing an entire operating system is extremely time-consuming and resource-intensive. It would also require a highly skilled software developer, which adds further cost. The effort and expense involved likely don’t justify the benefits. Plus, there would be no financial gain from it.

But why? If you needed a front end just for games, you'd use a console, not a PC. Also, Linux isn't fully ready for gaming yet. Sure, many games run, but there are still plenty that don't or need some strange adjustments that regular users struggle with. If you're after a distribution with Steam already installed, there are likely many options out there. It's not about building an OS from scratch, but rather modifying an existing one and swapping default programs. Still, it feels like a waste of time from my perspective.

We require no additional distributions; in fact, we should aim for fewer ones. Updated November 1, 2020 by Nayr438. SteamOS was discontinued as a project by Valve.

LMG has a single author who enjoys Linux. They require significantly more Linux-savvy team members with coding experience. Essentially, no official updates will be released anytime soon.
