I've been struggling to understand motherboard specifications lately. I thought any AM4 CPU would fit any AM4 board, but that’s not the case anymore. Right now, I’m using an ASRock AB350M and added Teamgroup Vulcan Z 32 GB 3200 RAM just to see what happens. It turns out my Ryzen 5 1400 gets hot when I try to overclock it with Corsair 16 GB RAM. I managed a 3.65 GHz boost before, but now I’m limited to lower speeds. Some say the RAM is forcing the CPU to work harder and cause overheating, even though I can’t run it at full capacity. For a Zen CPU, I’d expect to see more stability at around 2666 MHz, but I’m not sure if that’s enough.
There might be other problems if a small rise in IF and IMC power draw leads to this situation. Is it really overheating or causing the system to crash? You've been informed about this. Have you checked the CPU temperatures? Since it's the first generation, early IF won't increase much, so using 2933MHz at 1.35V with those timings should work fine.
I rely on Ryzen Master for temperature tracking. Using alternative settings or running the CPU stress test will likely reach 100°C, causing the test to halt or the system to shut down. In extreme cases, the computer may take several minutes to start up again. I plan to attempt higher memory speeds beyond 2666 MHz, though I’m worried it could increase heat generation. Since I’ve purchased an aftermarket CPU cooler, I intend to use it once temperatures and clock speeds stabilize. My goal is to push the CPU to 3.7 or 3.8. I believe other factors might contribute, but I suspect the RAM is the main issue, as that’s the only significant change I’ve made. Other communities suggest the RAM could be responsible too.
What voltage are you using to cause those high temperatures? It seems like a significant amount and a restricted cooling setup. Memory OC doesn’t substantially affect the CPU’s heat production, particularly if you don’t adjust the SOC voltage.
Beyond 1.25v is problematic. Someone warned me about possibly bumping the cooler, but I’ve moved it and checked—it looks stable. There might be only a tiny bit of movement, but the sink stays in place with the fan above.
Temp-wise? The first-gen Ryzen can manage higher voltages with proper cooling. You might want to invest in an aftermarket cooling solution around $30 for better performance.
