Automatic restart affects user profile
Automatic restart affects user profile
Hi.
This situation came as a surprise for me.
I was preparing to sleep and usually put the PC into sleep mode (lol...). I lay down, and the computer turned on by itself, taking some time to load. I sat there to check what happened and puff... I couldn't access my user profile—the only one I have. The system started a preset profile using my email and password, but everything was missing.
I searched in Regedit (User\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList) and didn’t find my profile. The damaged profile had files on drive D instead of the usual C, but I could still access them. Is there a way to restore the previous profile settings by changing the path or something?
Thank you.
You might attempt to run the system restore option. It should revert the registry to its state as it was on the restore date—provided one exists.
Reminder: this method may work better from advanced startup, especially if you're using a different user account.
For Windows 11 users, adjust accordingly.
Note (for Windows 10): the interface differs.
Proceed to settings/System/Recovery, select Advanced startup, click Restart now.
This will open a blue menu at boot. Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced options. Choose System restore and select a recent date if available.
If further changes are made later, you may lose those adjustments.
Startup repair on the same menu could also be useful.
Thank you for your response.
I've already tested it and it doesn't function properly.
It brings me back to the user created after the failure.
However, I notice in Regedit the User path differs from what appears when Windows starts.
For instance, the Profilepatch shows C:\Users\hans, but during login it displays a more complex name.
Even though I mentioned it has my email linked, I'm unsure if changing the path to the user folder on local disk D would help, as that is my original and sole user account.
The issue was resolved by reversing just the BIOS boot sequence...
