Audio in stereo isn't functioning properly on Windows using a regular account.
Earlier I purchased a new headset featuring 7.1 virtual surround and similar features to evaluate its performance compared to a basic model. However, I discovered my audio output was strictly mono, lacking any stereo support. After experimenting, it seems the stereo sound occasionally functions but then reverts to mono upon restart. The exclusive mode from Amazon Music provides stereo playback, and using Magix Music Maker with the WASAPI driver in exclusive mode also delivers stereo audio (though limited to Amazon Music and Magix Music Maker). My goal is to enjoy stereo or even 7.1 sound during gaming sessions, like Apex Legends, since missing directional cues is a major drawback. I’m using a standard account where stereo doesn’t work, while the admin account does. I’m running Windows 10 20H2, but the issue existed on older versions (Windows 1909 and 2004). So far I’ve tried reinstalling Windows, updating audio drivers, switching devices, and contacting Microsoft support—who recommended reinstalling both Windows and drivers (even suggesting the admin account, which isn’t available). Since help from Microsoft didn’t materialize, I’m now testing on another system—Ubuntu 20.04—which works flawlessly. Edited April 24, 2021 by lolocomotive
