Hello, I’m hoping someone can help us understand the problem my dad and I are facing, as we’re really stuck. His system is quite old—built in 2004—and originally ran Windows XP, which was later upgraded to Windows 7. Right now, he’s using 12 gigabytes of RAM, split into two 2-gigabyte modules and two 4-gigabyte modules. The motherboard is the GA-X48T-DQ6 (version 1.1). Based on online specs, this board should support 4 x 8-gigabit DDR3 sticks at 1600 or 1866 MT/s. The existing RAM includes two 4-gigabyte Corsair Vengeance modules and two 2-gigabyte Kingston Hyper-X units. The new RAM we’re using is Patriot Viper, with four 8-gigabit sticks at 1600 MT/s and four 8-gigabit sticks at 1866 MT/s. When trying to install both sets, the computer fails to boot—just powers on, shuts off instantly, or loops for over five to ten seconds. We’ve reset the CMOS, tried loading Optimized Defaults in BIOS, but nothing changes. Anyone know why this setup isn’t working? Any advice would be really appreciated! Thank you.

Consider using 1.65v rams for your board. 1.5v sticks were originally designed for Intel Core i processors from the first generation onwards. I own a 996982 kit from Mushkin Redline that came ready to use;

on my Rampage Extreme X48 chipset board, which I've been using for about eight years now.
If you're seeking a ram kit for your X48 platform, check the memory QVL on the board.
Regarding your motherboard;
the board is the GA-X48T-DQ6 (assuming revision 1.1).
Examine the bottom left corner of your motherboard to find the PCB revision number.
For higher speed memory, you'll need to look for 2.0v kits, though they won't significantly boost performance on the Core 2 platform. They performed best with DDR2 RAM, in my opinion.

Although Gigabyte only allowed 8GB on that board, 16GB is compatible. On every X38 or X48 board that supports DDR3, I have 16GB of DDR3 memory. The X38 and X48 chipsets can only handle up to 2Gbit memory, meaning sixteen chips would provide a maximum of 4GB. Also, four 8-chip sticks won't work since they exceed the supported density. If you manage to run DDR3 at 1600, using just one channel fully utilizes the FSB when overclocked to 1600FSB at 12.8GB/s. Extra bandwidth from dual-channel usage is only possible with integrated graphics, which these boards don't include.
