I’m curious about how computers and electronics work at a deeper level. At 66 years old, I’m trying to stay up-to-date with everything, but I face some challenges. Beyond swapping motherboards in desktops or laptops, can I make a motherboard accept a CPU that doesn’t match its original specs? For example, an eight-core Xeon that fits the socket but isn’t listed for that board, which is only rated for four cores? Is this even possible? I’m not sure if it’s a good idea, but I’d like to know if anyone has done something similar. Your thoughts would be appreciated!

It varies a lot—sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t. It could be achievable through bios modifications. Are you asking about a particular board and processor you're working with?

It's been done several times before. A current case is using 100 series boards (like Z170) built for 6th-7th generation processors paired with 8th-9th generation CPUs. Chinese modders often experiment with things they shouldn't, particularly when working with mobile CPUs and GPUs.

It depends. What board and what cpu? If its not on the cpu support list theres a very small chance. Some will just be an oversight but unless others have verified its a gamble. Making it possible yourself? No shot. Thats like bios modding, chipset chip hacking levels of complex which have entire dedicates groups of high skill people doing that with usually little success. So in this case what xeon and what board?
