Take a glance at the details and try to identify the specific model. HP developed a wide range of variations with this compact case design. When the unit is laid flat, the model identification appears on the left side panel near the rear, right beside the OS license label. You don’t need the serial number, but knowing the model will aid in assessing potential improvements. How many units are available? Are there any that are currently non-functional? What purpose do they serve presently? And what role will they play once upgraded?
I own the same machine with the identical CPU that I upgraded from an Athlon2 X2 B24. The Phenom2 X4 handles things well. I installed a GT430 and a 60GB SSD, and it performs excellently as a media PC. I haven’t played games on it yet, but it should work fine for school tasks. You might consider boosting the RAM to 8GB with the SSD upgrade—it could make studying much more enjoyable.
They will serve the same purposes but aim for greater consistency following the upgrade.
You realize this is a worldwide forum and most are much older than you? Hence my query about such a young person given authority to make hardware changes to school PC's.
