Hi everyone
I own an i5 2400, 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD, paired with a 500GB HDD, 760GTX graphics, and a 750W B2 EVGA power supply.
I’m planning to upgrade my PC for music production. I already have a 750W PSU and case, but I’m working with a tight budget.

I’ve been looking into motherboard CPU RAM kits for Xeon on Aliexpress—they offered great deals. However, FL Studio and DAW production seem to require solid single-core performance, similar to gaming. Xeon doesn’t match that, does it?

My current setup has decent benchmarks but a single-core score around 2000, which might not be ideal for DAW work. It could still work, though maybe it’s closer to an i7 in terms of overall performance but better at single-thread tasks.

I’m considering options within $100–$150 if I really want to go this route.
Here are a couple of links I found:
- 2680v4 with 16GB RAM and 120GB SSD
- 2682v4 with 16GB RAM and 107GB SSD

I also checked CPU benchmarks, which show good scores but a single-thread speed around 2000—possibly not enough for heavy DAW use. A lower overall score but better single-core performance might be preferable.

Thanks for reading!

The 500GB HDD seems too small for music production; a better option would be around 2TB or 4TB paired with another HDD of the same size for automatic backups.

I'll attempt to improve it next since I'm already running low on space. Right now, I'm having trouble completing the project because of the CPU constraints.

The information suggests FL Studio operates well with your existing setup.

Your funds would be better invested in storage solutions. Audacity is a top-notch (and free) multi-track music recording interface packed with features and effects that can export to MP3. It runs smoothly on an i5-2400, which is sufficient—I’ve seen it work on an i3-2100 as well.

I don’t think you should spend time on anything from AliExpress. You can find used parts and even whole systems at affordable prices if you know where to look, and you often get a brand-new WD Blue SN570 1TB for under $100.
