Hey everyone, I'm trying to decide on a laptop for work and gaming. Probably won't need a RAM upgrade, but if I do, I was thinking about replacing my 8GB SODIMM DDR4 3200MHz with either a 16GB or 32GB stick at 3200MHz. That would bring the total memory up to 24GB or 40GB. I've heard that this might reduce the dual-channel benefits since the 8GB is already soldered onto the board. I have a few questions and appreciate your help. It's still a bit of a beginner for me. Would 16GB of RAM work in dual channel after the upgrade? For instance, if I install a 32GB stick, would 16GB function in dual channel and 24GB in single channel? And if all 40GB were in single channel, what would be the real-world impact? I mainly use it for gaming and CAD tasks. Thanks!

16gb can operate in dual channel with the rest in single channel. Have you checked the new xmg core 15 AMD release? It offers two upgradeable RAM slots, improved cooling, and a lower price. It's also a standard laptop from a major OEM, so you might see it under various brand names.

If you have the sticks available, place them in and check if extra RAM improves things. If not, think about getting a two-stick package instead.

It's fixed because it's soldered.
