hello, i have an asus z97 a/3.1 mobo and an i5 4690k as you mentioned. i’m aware right away that the stock cooler isn’t ideal, but at the time it was all I had. i’m looking for guidance on a very light overclock—maybe around 4.3ghz if the stock fan can handle it. currently, i’m using the asus dual intelligent processors 5 and things are fluctuating a lot in temperature, going from lows of 36c to highs near 70c, and recently hit almost 80c. today the intel hd4600 stopped working, which made me realize the PCH was at 42c while the cpu was close to 80c. i’m currently idle between 45-55c. i also have some audio issues—when playing music, the bass drops volume until it comes back and then the sound gets louder again, then it lowers. this keeps happening. i’m new to overclocking intel hardware and this setup.
what i need help with: advice on starting points and immediate actions so i don’t risk damaging my cpu unless i’m certain it’s okay. i’m also open to tips on setting ram speed correctly for this configuration.
here are my current idle temperatures:

the issue i’m facing is that i can’t reach 3.9ghz without exceeding 80c.
I wouldn't be concerned about overclocking until you obtain a more efficient cooler for the CPU.
For other matters, please refer to the Asus support site for the latest BIOS and drivers. If you continue facing issues with sound or similar problems after those steps, you may want to think about replacing the motherboard.

Samat: I wouldn't stress over overclocking until you find a better cooler for the CPU. For other issues, check the Asus support site for the latest BIOS and drivers. If problems persist with sound or other aspects after those steps, replacing the motherboard might be a good option. Thanks! I haven’t been using a PC lately because I had to send back almost all my components and start fresh. Right now I’m looking for advice on Z170 boards and the i5 6600K (I’m planning to buy this CPU but don’t know how to get a graphics card and motherboard under 200 after the CPU). If you’re willing, please take a look at that post—it would be really helpful.
