Right now the newest Android release for the Zenfone 2 is 5.0. It seems odd given that 5.1 has been available for some time, and now 6.0 is coming out as well. I reached out to ASUS Tech Support to get their take on it, but they mentioned they can't predict a release date since they depend on Google sending updates. I’m pretty sure the responsibility lies with ASUS to modify the OS for their devices, not with Google. (Google must release the updated Android version, but ASUS should be able to adapt it for their phones.) Anyone with more insight on this would be appreciated. It’s interesting considering how Android 5.1 launched in February and the Zenfone 2 ze551ml came out in March—why didn’t it include 5.1 right away? It’s even more surprising that it’s still missing 5.1 except through the Community Manager.

It's typical, just use Google-sponsored gadgets for immediate updates

It's going to be similar to 2016, so things are going to take some time. I just started using my Zenfone with it.

Did you really score a 5.1 in February? You just got it last month—Moto X 2013 on Verizon. Great luck! The challenge with Android comes from fragmentation and carrier differences.

the decision rests with ASUS. i think they might be moving away from 5.1 and going straight for 6.0. if they don’t update, i’ll be really let down since the Zenfone 2 already has solid hardware but weak software. a 6.0 release could make it even stronger, or the Zenfone 3 would be great.

I saw that they intend to proceed to version 6.0, which is why they omitted 5.1. They resolved the battery problem, which is good news. I recall receiving about three updates in two weeks during September. It will happen eventually, whenever it comes.

You mentioned the 5.1 version wasn’t available on the Zenfone 2, recalling its release in February, similar to Android 6.0’s launch.

they didn’t resolve the battery problem; many Zenfones run on Android OS and consume about 30-40% of their battery life.

After roughly 15 hours without charging, I’ve got about 43% battery left—around 10 hours remaining according to the phone. It looks like the Android OS has consumed about half of the initial charge. Once it stabilizes, I’m aiming for at least 60% or more after a full day.

Sure, I can imagine it lasting only two days on the battery. It’s possible it’s a typical app that consumes power quickly, similar to Twitter, but I’m not sure.
