ASUS ROG Strix z490-E or ASRock Z490 Taichi
ASUS ROG Strix z490-E or ASRock Z490 Taichi
You're starting out with PC building and have a solid plan in mind. The choice between ROG Strix and ASRock Z490 depends on your priorities. The ASUS board offers more USB ports, which could be handy for your setup, while the ASRock model provides the features you need right now. Consider what matters most—performance, port count, or future upgrades—and weigh those against your budget and preferences.
I'm not sure why you haven't heard of asrock—they're among the top motherboard makers. A good feature is something you can't do worse just because it's on an asrock board. Choose a motherboard that matches the features you need, or in this case, the asrock board unless you discover another ASUS model offers more.
'Taichi' represents ASRock's premium board line. It matches the high-end Strix F/E models from ASUS and even competes with mid-range ROG Maximus options. Surprisingly, ASRock originated from ASUS but separated in the early 2000s before becoming an independent brand.
Isn't Taichi the board with those annoying VRM fans? Asrock seems to really want to skip it completely for the Z490 lineup. From what I can tell, there doesn’t appear to be any Z490 board that truly stands out against its rivals. I’d lean toward the Strix Z490-E, but I’d also definitely look at the Z490 Unify unless you’re planning to use an iGPU.
They mentioned the 'stupid fan' issue with The Z490 Taichi. It's unclear if the fix is complete. Their Taichi board for AMD and Z390 worked well, but they missed it for the Z490. I'd recommend considering an ASUS, Gigabyte, or MSi board instead for the Z490.
It's not about giving specific instructions, but usually the value proposition doesn't stand out enough for Intel. Most fans favor AMD because of better performance per dollar.
Thanks for the details! I think I’ll go with the ASUS board. The main advantage of the ASRock board was the additional USB 3.0 header in the case (my setup has four ports and I need two), but it might be more practical to add a PCIe card for USB on the Strix instead of choosing the ASRock option.
