It’s unclear if the overpriced ROG series offers real performance gains over the affordable Prime lineup. My experience shows that overclocking an i9-9900K with the Prime Z390-A MB at 5GHz works fine, so the value might be more about cost than performance. With the Alder Lake on the horizon, it’s worth considering whether the Prime series still delivers enough benefit or if investing in a more budget-friendly option makes sense. TUF seems like a solid choice for now.
Well I got my ROG things on sale. I got a better integrated sound card compared to Prime. Other than that.. not much. So I wouldn't buy it at full price. Now this is just a B450 board and if you are doing extreme overclocking (which it seems you don't) it may be worth to get some of the higher tier boards for their power delivery (ROG, EVGA Dark, MSI Godlike etc) but for normal use it won't do much good, on the contrary. The more features you pack into a board the more it will cost performance perhaps. However if you are the tinkering type that likes to turn lots of things on and you like a motherboard toy, it may be worth it. I don't know what your money is worth to you so I can't answer that hehe. Just get a board that have what you need (dual M.2 if you want to use more than one M.2, enough USB ports which btw is why I wanted this ROG b450 board).
In theory, performance should remain consistent, but premium motherboards typically feature superior VRM and cooling systems, providing greater overclocking potential due to improved stability at higher voltages. Hardware Unboxed previously discussed how budget boards can show noticeable performance drops on B560 chipsets, especially with high-end CPUs. Generally, anything above the i5 lineup tends to see better results. Beyond that, premium builds often boast higher-quality construction and more durable components, extending their lifespan. They might also include extra perks like built-in power/reset buttons or Q-code indicators—though whether the ROG series justifies it is hard to say until you try it. Always review user feedback before deciding and match your needs accordingly.
The 12th gen will bring challenges with power consumption and DDR5 compatibility, plus PCIe5 support. VRM temperatures have been a big issue lately—MSI really shined with the RAM OC on Intel boards and AMD APUs, it’s quite intense. Right now I’m excited about what MSI and ASUS will release. Most of the Strix options seem overpriced, so I’m focusing on the hero, Rampage, and Apex models. From what I’ve seen, the Z370 and Z390 rog stuff didn’t hold up well, compared to ASRock and Gigabyte, the Z490 was decent, and the X470 Hero was one of the top boards. I haven’t checked the Z590 X570 Hero yet, but Dark Hero is considered a strong choice. Apex has some of the best Intel RAM OC boards, often outperforming other brands, especially at the lower end. Keep an eye on reviews!
It seems the latest prime should work well. I mainly need the BIOS flashback button, CMOS reset, and debug LED features. Plus, I found a solid price on my board.
