What you likely mean is setting up Windows 7 without reformatting the HDD, placing all files in a folder named windows.old. This only occurs if you skip the reformatting step. Begin installing Windows 7, select Custom when prompted, and pick the desired HDD to install on. Avoid reformatting your drive, then after installation you’ll find a windows.old folder on the C drive. You can transfer all necessary data to this location and once you’re confident everything is copied, delete the windows.old folder.
