I can access the mic through both my front and rear 3.5mm jacks on my CPU case. The slider for the rear panel works fine, but it’s stuck in the front panel. That’s why recordings from the real panel sound clear and loud, while those from the front are barely audible. I only tested it, so I haven’t used the rear yet. Usually I prefer the front because the headphone wire is shorter. If you want to use the front panel audio slider, you’ll need to fix the locking issue. Since you’re new to Linux on Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.2 x64, let me know and I can guide you through the steps.

This problem resembles the one shared on ask ubuntu. Would you like me to check if that addresses your concern?
