You need to enable FTP access in FreeNAS by configuring the appropriate settings for the forwarded port. Check the documentation for your FreeNAS version to ensure you're setting up the correct FTP port and permissions.

When sharing over WAN, be extremely cautious to avoid exposing vulnerabilities. If using standard FTP, traffic isn't secure—consider switching to SSH. While I haven’t worked with FreeNAS directly, you might need tools like OwnCloud configured with FreeNAS or set up a no-ip setup combined with OpenVPN for secure VPN access. This approach would significantly enhance security compared to an open FTP service.

According to @yarn, this approach isn't secure. Still, you'll likely need a static IP or domain, configure freenas for WAN access and SFTP, and adjust some router/modem settings. I think freenas offers a relatively simple setup for FTP.
