Hey there, I'm trying to upgrade a PC I got at school for my mom. I'm looking into hard drives and have a few questions. Should I move a drive from her computer and install it on the school one? Would I lose anything from her drive? Or is there a way to copy all the files without moving the whole system, including Windows 10? Thanks a lot!

It’s best to follow this method: use your mother’s old computer and another device, such as a USB drive, external hard drive, or network share, to back up all the files you wish to preserve. Once the backup is complete, you can delete the original drive and mount it as an additional drive on the new system. After confirming everything is saved, you can proceed with the installation.

Sure, here are some options for backing up a hard drive without the operating system. You mentioned your method of wiping the old drive and reinstalling Windows—those steps can be useful for creating a clean backup.

I prefer handling this step by hand. The number of folders to back up is limited—Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Video. All are located at C:\Users\"user_name. If your mother is a basic user, there’s probably no other place she stores files, so you might need to ask her. After gathering them, you can transfer the files into the corresponding folders on the new machine. It’s straightforward.
